Greetings BCSB Members,

Sorry for the delay in getting the March Newsletter out. I’ve been travelling for the better part of 2 weeks and while I successfully dodged the COVID bullet, I came down with something else that is kicking my butt. Here are some important announcements about our upcoming March activities.

March Meeting Moved to Thursday 14 March

Our March Monthly Meeting will be moved from Tuesday, 12 March to Thursday 14 March as we welcome one of our favorite new bonsai professionals, Julian Tsai to town for a few days. On Thursday Julian will do a demonstration on one of our club-owned procumbens nanas (AKA miniature Japanese garden juniper) while providing important insight on branch development for junipers, in general. The doors open at 7:00 for socializing and asking general bonsai questions amongst club members. The meeting will kick off at 7:15. As always, the location is Bethany Congregational Church at 556 N. Hope Street in Santa Barbara.

March Workshop: 16 March with Julian Tsai

This Saturday (16 March), Julian Tsai will also be the professional instructor at our March Workshop. There will be two workshop sessions, morning (9-12) and afternoon (1-4) at Bethany Congregational Church. Each workshop session costs $50 (sorry, we can’t offer discounts if you want to participate in both sessions). Please contact Diana Boydstun ASAP to reserve your spot as Julian’s workshops fill up fast!

About Julian Tsai

Julian Tsai is a Southern California resident who discovered a passion for bonsai while in college. After graduation, he pursued an apprenticeship under Keiichi Fujikawa of Fujikawa Kouka-en in Osaka, Japan. Julian’s experience in Japan gave him a strong foundation in both evergreen and deciduous techniques. In his practice, he emphasizes horticulture and development that enables the sustainable design of trees. More information about Julian and his bonsai work is available at

See you Thursday (not Tuesday)
